Title: Executive Director

Reports to: Dubuque Regional Humane Society Board of Directors

Hours: 40+ hours per week, frequent evening and weekend hours required

Status: Exempt

 

Summary: The Executive Director of the Dubuque Regional Humane Society is responsible for developing and setting the strategic direction and priorities of the organization: building and overseeing the operational budget to ensure achievement of the organization’s financial goals and growth;  advancing the organization’s mission of protecting and promoting the well-being of all animals by fostering respect for their inherent dignity; promoting the organization’s local, regional and national image; developing major funding and sustainable revenue sources; empowering and developing staff; and promoting a positive work culture for employees and volunteers.

 

Essential Job Functions

Fundraising

  • Direct the design and implementation of the fundraising and public relations activities to grow and sustain awareness of DRHS programs and contributions to the community.

  • Oversee and engage directly in fundraising activities with particular emphasis on major gift cultivation and solicitation, corporate sponsorship and planned giving.

  • Direct oversight and engagement in the grant planning and application process.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with existing and prospective donors.

 

Leadership & Supervision

  • Oversee all of DRHS’ functional groups to ensure the best possible service, quality and efficient cost-effective management of resources.

  • Help to develop and implement strategies for quality leadership and management of staff and volunteers which includes: mentoring, motivating, hiring, evaluation, and termination.

  • Ensure that onboarding, recruitment, retention, management, development, and compliance of staff functions are carried out with excellence.

  • Delegate and empower staff to complete assigned tasks in the most efficient and effective manner.

  • Embrace cross-functional integration by delegating and assigning responsibilities and communicate expectations while allowing for individual flexibility.

  • Actively support staff and volunteers by providing a positive work environment to ensure that it is inclusive and respectful.

  • Communicate the DRHS mission, services, programs and events internally for staff awareness.

 

Operational Management

  • In partnership with the Board of Directors, provide vision for, develop and continually update as necessary short and long-term strategic plans and operating budgets that ensure the advancement of DRHS’s mission and objectives as well as revenue and growth for sustainability long term. 

  • Implement the strategic plan and annual operational and fundraising plans to ensure the successful achievement of financial goals and growth.

  • Effectively manage resources for the maximum benefit of the organization.

  • Communicate and coordinate with all government entities holding ongoing DRHS contracts and negotiate in the best interest of DRHS and the Dubuque community on these contract renewals.

  • Maintain and update internal records in a timely and accurate manner to ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements.

  • Promote good public relations in accordance with DRHS practices; seize opportunities to strengthen the professional image and manage crisis communications as necessary.

  • Prepare and present regular reports for the Board at and between monthly meetings to report on performance.

  • Inform the Board of opportunities and challenges that may affect the DRHS in regard to operations, media coverage, public relations and senior personnel changes.

 

Qualifications:

Knowledge and Skills Required

  • A Bachelor’s degree in business or related field of study or an equivalent combination of education/experience.

  • Minimum of five years management experience.

  • Excellent written and verbal communications and presentation skills.

  • Demonstrated success in fundraising and grant writing.

  • Knowledge of marketing and public relations.

  • Experience developing and managing budgets.

  • Must have a valid driver’s license.

 

Preferred

  • Professional animal care experience

  • Certified Animal Welfare Administrator (CAWA) certification.

  • Non-profit management experience
