Director of Community Development

Title: Director of Community Development

Reports to: Executive Director

Hours: 40 hours per week, some extended, evening and weekend hours required

Status: Exempt

 

Summary: The Director of Community Development works closely with the Executive Director to implement development and fundraising strategies to advance the DRHS mission and strategic plan, and to build and strengthen relationships with the varying audiences and stakeholders the DRHS serves. Additionally, the Director will manage opportunities to promote the organization at community events and activities to raise awareness of the DRHS and the services offered.

 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Development, Fundraising, and Events

  • Collaborate with the Executive Director to develop an annual, comprehensive fund development plan that includes goals, objectives and action steps to raise necessary funding for the organization.

  • Plan, coordinate, and execute fundraising events to meet budgeted goals.

  • In consultation with Marketing, produce materials and tools to communicate regularly with donors, supporters, and potential allies of the DRHS.

  • Identify opportunities to network with donors and prospects and engage members of the staff as appropriate to maximize those opportunities.

  • Provide direct support to the Executive Director for donor related activities, such as scheduling meetings or writing communications.

  • Identify and implement opportunities for donor recognition, stewardship, and appreciation.

  • Oversee the accurate entry into and use of the donor database. Manage other functions provided for the receipt of gifts, event participation, etc.

  • Identify and execute new and creative opportunities for fundraising.

  • Research and manage public and private grant writing and reporting initiatives in collaboration with the Executive Director, as well as other designated grant writers.

  • Develop partnerships with local businesses, organizations and individuals to generate resources and advance the mission of the DRHS.

  • Collaborate with leadership and staff, as needed, to identify needs and opportunities for mission advancement.

  • Establish and attend professional and community events to represent, promote and increase awareness of the DRHS.

  • In coordination with staff leadership, manage and/or oversee special events, and fundraising engagements in support of the DRHS’ programs and services.

General Responsibilities

  • Represent the DRHS in a professional manner to the public. Serve as a friendly and compassionate face in public and private settings.

  • Advance the mission of the DRHS through ethical practices. Maintain confidentiality of donors and donor information.

  • Execute other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Related bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.

  • Existing experience and facility with Microsoft Office Suite.

  • Work collaboratively with diverse groups of people, including volunteers, supervisors and staff.

  • Communicate effectively to large audiences and individuals. Know appropriate use of verbal, written and email communication and select appropriate channels when needed.

  • Have a steadfast belief in the mission, policies and procedures of the DRHS.

  • Make decisions in the best interest of the organization.

  • Have strong organization, interpersonal and multi-tasking skills. Able to prioritize and adhere to deadlines.

  • Be creative and resourceful. Able to coordinate resources to help fulfill responsibilities.

  • Prior experience in fund development or nonprofit work is preferred.

 

Working Environment

The Director of Community Development will encounter regular exposure to animal odors, diseases, possible contagious conditions, bites, scratches, animal waste, and high noise level.
