Director of Community Care

Title: Director of Community Care

Reports to: Executive Director

Hours: 40 hours per week, including evening and weekend hours

Status: Non-Exempt

 

Summary: The Director of Community Care is responsible for exceptional levels of service to members of the community and volunteers at the Dubuque Regional Humane Society, and provides team members with appropriate tools, direction, and motivation to enable success while overseeing all processes and procedures.

 

Essential Job Functions

Community Care

  • Greet and provide timely, compassionate, and courteous service to members of the community, visitors, and volunteers as they enter Kinsey’s Campus. Provide accurate information to members of the community and volunteers about the DRHS’ policies and procedures. Respond to questions, concerns, and issues from the public in a professional manner. Assist members of the community and volunteers with animals for socialization.

  • Provide adoption counseling to ensure optimal fit for animal well-being for adoptions and adoption holds, and handle adoption returns, as needed. Receive payments for services by cash or credit card.

  • Receive owner surrendered and stray animals with compassion. Ensure timely transport of information from proper Veterinary Clinic. Ensure completion of intake forms.

  • Execute and oversee business and administration functions including necessary reporting, cash handling, data entry, and daily transactions. Balance cash registers and count deposit cash at the end of the night.

  • Facilitate community complaints in collaboration with the Executive Director, Director of Operations, and Director of Community Engagement.

  • Collaborate with Animal Care Supervisor to ensure quality community service from Animal Care Technicians.

  • Effectively communicate any changes or communications to community care employees to ensure proper communication to members of the community and volunteers.

 

Administration Funtions

  • Maintain knowledge of animal inventory, shelter events, and special needs of the shelter.

  • Answer phones, return phone and email messages, data entry into PetPoint, filing, copying, and faxing.

  • Promote professionalism and high standards of service. Demonstrate commitment and understanding of safety.

  • Ensure the cleanliness and organization of the front desk and pet pantry areas.

  • Collaborate with the Director of Community Engagement to train volunteers to provide guidance for members of the community and other visitors of the DRHS.

  • Create lost and found pet reports. Receive and accurately record in-kind donations and store in proper locations.

  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Human Resources

  • Oversee the day-to-day work of community care employees

    • Communicate effectively with employees to provide positive feedback and correct areas in need of improvement.

    • Maintain a spirit of teamwork, collaboration, and respect in collaboration with leadership.

  • Ensure safety guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures are maintained.

  • Ensure Community Care team maintains an effective working relationship with volunteers, communicating, supporting, and engaging volunteers to foster a collaborative working environment.

 

Requirements

  • Have steadfast belief in the mission, policies, and procedures of the DRHS.

  • Make decisions in the best interest of the organization.

  • Work collaboratively with diverse groups of people including volunteers, department supervisors, and staff.

  • Communicate effectively to large audiences and individuals. Know appropriate use of verbal, written, and e-mail communication and select appropriate channels when needed.

  • Strong organization, interpersonal, and multi-tasking skills. Able to prioritize and adhere to deadlines.

  • Detail oriented and resourceful.

  • Animal handling skills.

  • Lift up to 25 lbs.

  • Stand and sit for long periods of time, bend, twist, and stoop.

  • Previous management or supervisor responsibilities, preferably in community service, animal welfare, or shelter setting is desired.

 

Working Environment

The Director of Community Care will encounter regular exposure to animal odors, diseases, possible contagious conditions, bites, scratches, animal waste, and high noise level.
