
Bookkeeping & Human Resources Intern
Description:
This internship offers students practical experience in nonprofit bookkeeping and human resources administration. The Bookkeeping & Human Resources Interns will work alongside the Bookkeeping and Human Resources Administrator at the Dubuque Regional Humane Society (DRHS), supporting the organization’s financial and HR functions while advancing its mission.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this internship, students will:

Develop foundational skills in bookkeeping, including accounts payable/receivable and payroll processing.

Gain experience in human resources tasks, such as recruitment, orientation, and employee file management.

Enhance understanding of nonprofit operational processes, including donor database management and compliance with state and federal laws.

Learn effective communication and administrative practices in a dynamic work environment.
Internship Requirements:

Assist in recording and reconciling financial transactions using accounting software.

Support payroll processing, tracking employee time, and maintaining PTO records.

Help manage HR documentation, including employee files, onboarding, and benefits administration.

Participate in donor database updates and correspondence for donor acknowledgment.

Contribute to office management tasks such as inventory tracking and vendor communication.
Prerequisites:

Interest in animal welfare and shelter operations.

Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical tasks, including standing, bending, and stooping for extended periods.

Willingness to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays if needed.

Strong interpersonal skills and a collaborative attitude.
Work Environment:
Interns will encounter regular exposure to animal odors, potential allergens, contagious conditions, high noise levels, and the physical demands of working with animals, including potential bites or scratches.

Credit Hours: Determined in consultation with academic advisor and DRHS supervisor.
